"The future has a way of arriving unannounced." -George Will

TOP 10 2011 ALBUMS
1. Dawes- Nothing Is Wrong. The record Jackson Browne wishes he could have made.
2. Wilco- The Whole Love. The best rock band on the planet.
3. Cirrone- Uplands Park Road. Three Italians from Sicily. AYFKM!!! Power pop album of the year!
4. Yuck- Yuck. What a debut! Great noise pop from a bunch of 20 year old kids.
5. Mister Heavenly- Out Of Love. Great debut on Sub Pop from a great indie rock band.
6. Telekinesis- 12 Desperate Straight Lines. It's indie rock through and through, with plenty of ringing guitars and propulsive tempos.
7. Middle Brother- Middle Brother. Side project of the year.
8. The Strokes- Angles. Welcome back! Great mix of power pop and post punk.
9. Mayer Hawthorne- How Do You Do. Just try and keep your feet still- go ahead.
10. The Decemberists- The King Is Dead. Great band in their own right- then add Peter Buck, David Rawlings and Gillian Welch and you’re over the top.

DNY- HOF NOMINEES AND ONE DELETION
1. Nick Lowe
2. America
3. Big Star
4. Leon Russell should be out.

Sorry- can’t do this in one sentence. What defined the music of the noughties for me is also what shaped our world- technology and the internet. Technolgy has made everything faster and more crowded. It’s changed every facet of our lives- the way we get our news; shop; communicate; and- listen to music. Remember when Rolling Stone magazine came out? Now we have the internet crowded with a staggering array of music blogs devoted to single genres- never mind the entire music scene. Not that this is a bad thing. For instance, indie music is thriving thanks to the internet. What does the future hold??? More technology.

2011...Another Year, Another Top 10 List

Top 10 CD's of 2011

10. Satisfied - Joe Ely A laid back, homemade country CD with flashes of the guitar work that makes him a rockabilly legend.

9. Mission Bell - Amos Lee For me to like a folk CD this much it has to be good.

8. Guitar Slinger - Vince Gill More than just a tenor who is a pop/country star, he can play guitar.

7. Roots - Johnny Winter Exactly what you'd expect from him...and more.

6. End Game - Rise Against Somebody had to put out a really good rock record, and this was it for me.

5. Here Before - The Feelies I liked them in the '70's and I like them just as much now.

4. Sky Full of Holes - Fountains of Wayne Not their best, but better than any other power pop out there over the past year.

3. Wasting Light - Foo Fighters It's Dave Grohl, and it's awesome.

2. You, Me and Ghost - Sleeping in the Aviary Sometimes you hear a CD that just grabs you by the throat and demands that you listen repeatedly until you love it. That's this one for me.

1. El Camino - Black Keys My favorite listen of the year.

My Nominees for our HOF were:
Green Day
Chicago
Jeff Lynne

One sentence to describe music in 2011...A widely disparate mix of rock/pop/rap with nothing so galvanizing as to appeal to a universal audience.

Trend for the teens?...More of the same, but with less guitar and more electronic effects. Everyone, regardless of genre will be "autotuned".

Thanks for a great year and turning me on to things like Hayes Carl, Keith, Top of the Pops, Sleeping in the Aviary, and of course, the Best of the Accordion!

2011 Year in Review

2011 Notes

Making a best-of disc was a nightmare. Lots of great songs, and my two favorites were 7+ minutes long each which made it more challenging. Albums were a different story. 5 great ones and about 15 that were interchangeable on any given day. Surprisingly, lots of normally reliable bands laid major eggs most notably Death Cab for Cutie, Drive By Truckers, Southern Culture on the Skids, Ray Davies, and Okkervil River.

In the mix, but not today’s (These are definitely not Honorable Mentions):

Dum Dum Girls
Yuck
Smithereens
Mogwai

Ye Olde Top 10

10. Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears – Scandalous – Vocals reminiscent of James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub Party, but its bootyliscious fo sho.

9. Dave Alvin – Eleven Eleven – Best disc I found through the group this year. Good roots rock.

8. Lydia Loveless – Indestructible Machine – Female cow punk and sass to spare. My favorite new artist of the year.

7. Social Distortion – Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes – Great to have Mr. Ness and company back and in form.

6. Wilco – The Whole Love – I whole-y loved about 2/3 of it. More than a couple of snoozers though.

5. Hayes Carll – KMAG YOYO – Quantum leap from his debut, and a real hoot.

4. The Black Keys – El Camino – Damn, are they on a roll. In constant rotation for the last month

3. The Decemberists – The King is Dead – A 180-degree turn from their last one. Simple, well written and expertly played.

2. Fountains of Wayne – Sky Full of Holes – Best power pop band in the world delivers again.

1. My Morning Jacket – Circuital – They get better with each release. A great record from start to finish.

Hall Of Fame Nominees:

Stevie Ray Vaughn
The Replacements
Uncle Tupelo (Thanks for nixing, you Abba loving bastards)

Remove:

Abba - I still challenge anyone to name an Abba song that prominently features a guitar.

The 2000’s

Because of the myriad of choices and ease of attaining, music is more disposable than ever, and finding great discs with staying power is hard. This will continue in the teens.
