Cracker
Only got to listen to the cd once. Really like Cracker, and Camper Van Beethoven before that. But this seems as if it was mailed in. Still sounds like Cracker, but the energy just seems off. Will listen again to be sure but didn’t hear anything that grabbed me. 2.0
Amended 8/20. Have listened to it a few times since. Not my favorite but still a decent cd. 3.0
Herbie Hancock.
When it comes to jazz I am definitely don’t bore us get to the chorus kind of guy. And since jazz doesn’t have too many choruses I find it difficult to listen to. And that is the problem with this cd; there is nothing memorable about it. Yes the playing is impeccable, but there is not one moment that stays with you after listening. No outstanding riff or musical passage that makes you stop and say wow. Just music being played extremely well that unfortunately falls to the background rather quickly. 2
Modest Mouse
Another quirky band that I really should like but I don’t. Love the first 3rd Planet. Second song is good, but a little slower and the third is good. But the rest just seems too much of the same and slower as we go. Quirky for quirky sake, but really not really accomplishing too much. 2.5
Placebo
A love them or hate them sort of Brit pop. Somewhere near but not quite the Muse, visiting David Bowie along the way but still big and bombastic and that what makes these guys really good. Brian Molko gets most of the attention for his androgynous looks and distinctive vocal style. But he writes and plays some good riffs and the other two give great support on the bass and the drums. There are some excellent moments. Ashtray Hearts, The Never Ending Why, For What its Worth are all great pop songs. In fact its not until after Julien that the cd tends to bog down a bit, but that leaves the listener with nine pretty good songs. This isn’t their best work but its close. 3.5
Otis Redding
Just a great collection of songs from an incredible singer. Surprised just how much and how good the guitar parts were in these songs.
Figured if I am going to get any I must give them something she finds romantic. But its gotta be my type of music or it just not going to work. This is why I call this play list:
Why I am smooth with the ladies
Baby is a Headfuck The Wildhearts (if she doesn’t like this I have no hope)
Incredible, Dramarama
Isn’t it Amazing, Hothouse Flowers
Everytime I Think of You, The Baby’s
Do You Love Me, Kiss
Everything Material Issue
Love You Til the End, The Pogues
If I have reached the final inning and I know how long I got, then I want to hear songs that I consider to be my favorites. I call this play list:
Elizabeth, I’m Coming to Join Ya
Little Baby Nothing, Manic Street Preachers
Incredible, Dramarama
Cowboy Song, Thin Lizzy
Red Chord, The Frames
Loser (live version) UFO
I Don’t Wanna, The Call
It’s Late, Queen
