Vent / Question

So at what point does an artists continued production of crap take away from their legend? I had the misfortune of hearing new songs from Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones today. The Stones was innocuous enough, the same garbage they've turned out the last 15 years or so. Clapton's was off the charts bad. I mean top 40 soft rock vomit inducing bad. I don't get the thought process behind his choices. Every so often he puts out a blues CD or does something like the Concert For George and I think, "Damn, he's still got it". Then he does something like this.

Its like watching Willie Mays when he played for the Mets. Just damn sad.

Ok, I've contributed. Ken, I hope you like my photo, I couldn't decide which one to use....

If said artist(s) do not voluntarily retire, understanding that they are not longer vital, or they are not euthanised, they should be relegated to that of an oldies touring act. If said artist is a true great (i.e. Stones) an ad-hoc committee should be put together to decide a cut-off date as which said artists' work should be ignored henceforth. Such ban should be lifted only upon a truly great release.

When Willie was with the Mets they made the world series. True his play was poor and at times god-awful but at least he ended his career on center stage doing something that he loved.

True some of these supposed stars are only in it because of all those zeroes at the end of the check. But if they are able to have one more great moment, wouldn't you want to be able to be there when it happens.

And most importantly if someone who was to young when these stars were relevant, catches this performance, maybe they will take the time to research their catalogs to find out why. And from this research maybe they will also find more about their influences etc.

The musicians maybe be past their prime, and their chops may be lacking, but when all is said and done they are still doing something they love on center stage.
